ICT nieuws t/m week 24 - 2009

De afgelopen periode was nogal druk en het posten wilde ook niet vlotten. Daardoor zijn mijn posts wat ouder maar hopelijk zijn ze toch nog interessant genoeg om het door te lezen. Een van de posts gaat over onze eigen Steven die een verhaaltje zou gaan vertellen over Exchange 2010. Dat kan ik nu niet meer aankondigen, het is al geweest.

Veel Windows 7 wat de klok slaat maar laten we Server 2008 R2 vooral niet vergeten. Veel over de nieuwe features en leuke videootjes. SP2 voor Vista en Server 2008 verscheen, zeker downloaden, net als SP1 voor SQL 2008. Natuurlijk ook veel Oracle, dat spreekt voor zich. Opvallend is ook Microsoft's nieuwe decision making engine, kort voor Internet zoekmachine, met de ietwat merkwaardige naam Bing. De resultaten lijken erg goed maar of het echt zal aanslaan moeten we nog maar afwachten. Een onderwerp dat door collega Gabrie van Zanten werd aangedragen is 'slim Windows licenties kopen' als je virtualiseert. Als je met virtualisatie te maken hebt zou ik de onderwerpen zeker lezen. Slim inkopen kan veel euri's besparen. En uiteraard zijn er bakken met artikelen over Exchange Server, van 2003 tot en met 2010. Goed leesvoer.

Al met al veel leesplezier en als het een beetje wil lukken zal ik nog deze week het blog opnieuw bijwerken. Happy reading.

We've received several reports of ISA Server Standard Edition restart

failures after installation of last week's security updates.

The error message observed in this circumstance is: "*Event ID 14109

(The ISA Server Standard Edition cannot run. Either the server is using

more than 4 processors....).*"

*Notes:

1. *this specific problem *_only_* affects ISA Server Standard Edition

and *_only _*when it's running on a computer that has a total of more

than 4 CPU cores.

*2. *this issue /does not/ affect Forefront TMG (MBE)

The problem occurs when you install the MS09-012 patch under very

specific circumstances. The Windows Sustained Engineering team is

producing a detailed explanation of this behavior for the MS09-012

bulletin articles and will post that as soon as it's ready.

In the meantime, you can employ the following workaround to put your ISA

Server back in service:

1. click the *Start *button, select *Run*

2. in the *Run *dialog, enter /cmd/ and click *OK*

3. in the command window

a. type /attrib -a -s -r -h c:\boot.ini/ and hit *Enter*

b. type /notepad c:\boot.ini/ and hit *Enter*

4. at the end of the line under /[operating systems]/, enter //numprocs=4/

*Note*: if you have multiple boot entries, you should add this entry

to the end of the line that is used to boot the default OS instance

where ISA Server runs

5. save the boot.ini file

6. in the command window, type /attrib +a +s +r +h c:\boot.ini/ and hit

*Enter*

7. reboot your computer

Na IBM doet nu Oracle een gooi naar Sun. Oracle is bereid meer dan $ 7 miljard te betalen voor Sun.

IBM is volledig uit het plaatje verdwenen, zij willen Sun niet meer overnemen.

CNet weet te melden dat Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer niet gauw met zijn mond vol tanden staat. Oracle’s zet om Sun over te nemen heeft echter voor een enorme verrassing gezorgd bij zowel Microsoft als IBM.

Microsoft gaat 2 versies van Windows 7 beschikbaar maken voor de immer populaire netbooks. Fabrikanten kunnen kiezen uit de Starter Editiion en de Home Premium versie.

Uiteraard zullen er vooral Starter Editions verkocht gaan worden maar misschien is de Home Premium versie nog wel de interessantste.

Op haar TechNet site legt een Microsoft engineer uit hoe je Windows 7 op een USB stick kunt installeren. Dit kun je dan gebruiken om Windows 7 mee op een Netbook te installeren. Het e.e.a. wordt in een video uitgelegd.

Op de TechNet site van Microsoft wordt uitgelegd hoe je met de Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 (is nog in beta) een snelle upgrade van Windows XP naar Windows 7 kunt uitvoeren. Vooral de optie met hardlinks is interessant. Deze optie zorgt ervoor dat je een verse Windows 7 installatie hebt met behoud van je data (niet je programma’s) in een minuut of 30.

There's been a lot of press about how there isn't a an upgrade path from Windows XP to Windows 7. In this video, Jeremy walked me through using the latest beta of the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, specificallly the User State Migration Tool, to transfer the user settings and files from a Windowx XP installation to a new install of Windows 7 on the same PC.
One of the really cool features in this new version is hardlink migration. In the past, if you wanted to back up all of a users files and settings, those had to be transferred to a different drive, and the new OS install would wipe the machine, complete the new install, and then you'd transfer the files back. With hardlink migration, all the files stay in place on the machine, and the Win7 install just updates file locations with hardlinks. This means the install and settings transfer happens much faster, because the files aren't transferred at all, just the paths to them are updated. It's really cool, and means you can have a fresh install of Win7, with all your XP files and settings, completed in as few as 30 minutes.

HP heeft een antwoord gepresenteerd op Cisco’s nieuwe bladecenters. HP denkt dat Cisco veel te ver buiten haar core business gaat opereren, m.a.w. dat Cisco te weinig van de servermarkt weet.

HP zelf denkt dat het naar utility computing zal gaan, bedrijven zullen op zoek gaan naar services en niet meer naar hardware (behalve Service Providers dan natuurlijk).

Oracle lijkt grote datacenter plannen te hebben. Met de koop van Sun wordt Oracle ineens een partij die een partijtje mee gaat blazen in het datacenter.

Echter lijken er ook een groot aantal ontslagen in het verschiet te liggen voor de Sun werknemers, waarschijnlijk duizenden. Analisten denken dat Oracle mogelijk een derde van Sun’s 33.000 medewerkers de zak zou kunnen krijgen.

De formele standaard voor Bluetooth 3.0 HS is nu rond. Apparaten die voldoen aan de nieuwe standaard kunnen, als er een 802.11 radio aan boord, is overschakelen op zeer hoge snelheden. De 902.11 radio zal worden gebruikt voor grote datatransfers. Uiteraard blijft het e.e.a. backwards compatibel.

Aaron Steibner geeft op zijn MSDN-blog antwoord op de vraag of je oudere versies van het .NET Framework nog nodig hebt na de installatie van versie 3.5 (SP1).

Het blijkt dat deze versie, 3.5 SP1, op de achtergrond ook .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 en .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 installeert. Die kun je dan ook niet verwijderen.

Michael Otey licht de nieuwe features van Windows 2008 R2 toe. Hij heeft een top 10 samengesteld.

1. 64-bit only – Microsoft’s eerste OS dat alleen in een 64-bits versie uitkomt (niet Microsoft’s eerste 64-bit only product overigens, dat was Exchange 2007)

2. Support for 256 cores – Dit klinkt natuurlijk heftig want dergelijke systemen bestaan er momenteel nog niet. Intel is echter hard op weg om processoren te ontwikkelen die wel die kant op gaan. De 6-core CPU is er nu al en de 8-core is al aangekondigd. Windows 2008, de huidige versie, moet het overigens doen met 64-core limiet.

3. Core parking – Deze feature maakt het mogelijk voor het OS om cores die niets te doen hebben tijdelijk uit te zetten. Dit zal energie besparen.

4. Remote Desktop Services – Dit is de nieuwe naam voor Terminal Services. De nieuwe versie zal DirectX 9, 10 en 11 ondersteunen en ook het gebruik van meerdere monitoren.

5. Hyper-V 2.0 – Deze nieuwe versie heeft ook de live migration feature die VMware al jaren heeft. Maar ook kunnen VM’s meer resources aanspreken zoals een maximum van 32 cores.

6. Live Migration – Dit is waarschijnlijk de belangrijkste verbetering van Hyper-V. Systemen kunnen nu binnen een Server 2008 cluster live verplaatst worden zonder dat een VMware downtijd nodig heeft.

7. Support use of .NET Framework in Server Core – Het was dikwijls heel jammer dat Server Core geen .NET Framework ondersteunt. Daarvoor konden bepaalde zaken niet op Server Core draaien, waaronder PowerShell en ASP.NET.

8. PowerShell 2.0 – De nieuwe versie van PowerShell is behoorlijk verbeterd. Zo is er een GUI voor het maken en debuggen van scripts.

9. Remote Server Management – Server Manager is een dijk van een beheertool, jammer alleen dat het alleen lokaal op de server gebruikt kan worden. In R2 kan het ook op beheerstations geïnstalleerd worden om servers remote te beheren.

10. Active Directory Administration Center – Dit is mogelijk nog wel de grootste verandering/verbetering. Dit nieuwe tool is gebouwd bovenop PowerShell en vervangt alle huidige AD beheertools. Het is uiteraard volledig scriptable, het is tenslotte gebouwd op PowerShell. Een gave nieuwe feature is de AD Recycle Bin.

No word from Microsoft on how successful Windows Essential Business Server 2008 has been. The company was looking to win over more than 1 million mid-sized businesses with the offerings formerly codenamed Centro. Successful or not, Microsoft is ready to move ahead with Windows Essential Business Server, and is looking to start work on version 2. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Windows Essential Business Server 2010/2011, and leaning hard toward 2010 for the version number. There’s also another possibility involving the traditional server versioning label: R2.

NetApp heeft een verhaal geschreven over een virtualisatie exercitie die ze voor haar eigen ontwikkelafdeling in Bangalore heeft uitgevoerd. Het ging om zo’n 1.000 fysieke servers die ze naar 20 VMware servers hebben overgezet. Op zich niet heel erg schokkend natuurlijk maar toch een behoorlijk project dat vanwege de omvang toch wel erg interessant is als leesvoer.

At the NetApp engineering lab in Bangalore, India, our operational goal is to meet the compute and storage needs of roughly 700 development engineers working on a wide variety of critical NetApp development efforts, including WAFL®, NAS and SAN, storage management, VTL, open systems SnapVault® (OSSV) and SnapDrive® for UNIX®.

As of August 2008, we had deployed about 1,000 physical x86 servers to meet the diverse needs of these and other engineering projects, and the demand was continuing to grow at a rate of about 40 servers per month—roughly two racks of compute servers every month. This growing demand created a concern about available rack space, power, and cooling capacity. The situation was further complicated by the slow and inflexible provisioning processes of physical servers, making it difficult for us to meet engineers’ demands.

Project COLD (Consolidation and Optimization of Lab/Datacenter) was initiated with the goal of consolidating and virtualizing these critical engineering resources. We are currently in the middle of this transition. At completion, we expect to replace 50% or more of our original 1,000 physical servers with just 20 VMware® ESX servers. A limited number of physical servers (final number to be determined) will be retained for application testing that requires physical hardware.

Our VMware servers will also accommodate future growth while greatly improving our ability to adapt to changing requirements from engineers.

IBM heeft overeenkomsten gesloten met Juniper en Brocade om Cisco in het datacenter te bevechten. IBM zal opnieuw Brocade apparatuur gaan rebranden en als IBM gaan wederverkopen. Dit deed IBM eerder ook al maar nu voegt IBM de switches en routers die Broacde levert vanuit de Foundry Networks overname toe.

Daar is dan nog een deal met Juniper aan toegevoegd wat vanuit IBM een “alles behalve Cisco” strategie lijkt aan te geven.

Microsoft heeft de afgelopen week ook Service Pack 2 voor Windows Vista (Engels, Frans, Duits, Japans en Spaans) afgemaakt.

Deze update zal de komende maanden uiteraard in meer talen verschijnen en op WSUS en WU gaan verschijnen.

Ook voor dit service pack is weer een blocker tool verschenen dat hier te downloaden is.

Het Service Pack is nog niet op Microsoft’s download site verschijnen, wel wordt het al op Torrent Sites aangeboden en op MS TechNet.

Deze white paper werd door Microsoft en NetApp gezamenlijk geschreven. Het geeft veel uitleg bij het gebruik van Hyper-V in combinatie met NetApp storage.

Men heeft een denkbeeldig bedrijf genomen en dat als case uitgewerkt, dus met Exchange 2007 en SQL Server 2008.

NetApp and Microsoft are working together on a number of solutions. This paper presents a customer blueprint based on a typical but fictitious customer to illustrate how a complete end-to-end virtualization solution can address remote site recovery and many of the other challenges that organizations face today. It includes sample implementation architecture, with specific configuration and hardware details, to illustrate how a Hyper-V and NetApp solution is deployed in a real world scenario.

The IT infrastructure described in this white paper was originally designed by the NetApp Microsoft Alliance team and developed into a working, demonstrable system for the annual Microsoft TechEd conference in 2008. Although the company is fictitious, the business and technical requirements are a composite of requirements from real NetApp and Microsoft customers.

Er is opnieuw een ernstig lek gevonden in Adobe’s PDF reader en writer programma’s. Er is ook al proof-of-concept code gevonden op het web dat het lek misbruikt. Microsoft heeft de eerste Release Candidate van Windows 7 afgelopen week uitgebracht. Het komende jaar kan een ieder het OS testen, de RC blijft een jaar werken. Microsoft zegt zelf dat de RTM-versie in 2009 uit zal komen, wat door Acer bevestigd lijkt te worden. Acer zegt dat het oktober gaat worden. Vanaf 5 mei is de RC voor iedereen te downloaden.

De geruchten gaan dat Windows 7 een zogenaamde Windows XP zal krijgen. Dit zou een soort van virtuele omgeving binnen Windows 7 zijn gebaseerd op Virtual PC. Hierover heeft Microsoft nog bitter weinig bekend gemaakt. Deze nieuwe XP-mode is nog geen onderdeel van de Release Candidate.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes van ZDnet heeft een tijdje Windows 7 op zijn Samsung NC10 netbook gehad. Dit artikel geeft weer wat hij ervan vond.

Al met al werkte het op zijn 1.6 GHz Intel Atom machientje best goed, hoewel hij eigenlijk tot de conclusie kwam dat 2 GB RAM wel het beste is. Windows XP met IE 7 werkte met 1 GB wel goed. Ook de 7,5 GB disk die Windows 7 inneemt is iets om op te letten.

During the second keynote on MMS on the 29th of April, Brad Anderson announced a new product in the System Center product suite called. System Center Online Desktop Manager (SCODM).

System Center Online Desktop Manager provides the tools to update pc's while they are off-premise. System Center Online Desktop Manager features:

Host protection
Desktop Monitoring
Desktop Configuration
IT Asset Management
Update Management
Remote Assistance

SCODM will be updated every half year to include new features, like for example software distribution. It's expected to be released in 2010 and is now in beta with selected customers. SCODM is build on top of the windows update technology. To give an example on this technology: last month, MS updated 650 million pc's with Windows Update.
SCODM works in a browser session and is built with Silverlight. Major advantage of this is that reports are linkable and can be sent to anyone.

Ed Bott van ZDnet stelt zichzelf hardop de vraag hoe het straks zal lopen met de nieuwe XP mode in Windows 7. Om het goed werkend te krijgen heb je een Intel (of AMD) processor met ingebouwde virtualisatie nodig. Adobe heeft een fix uitgebracht voor een levensgroot security gat in Flash Media Server. Hackers konden dit gat benutten om remote procedures in Flash Media Interactive Server of Flash Media Streaming Server uit te voeren.

Er is natuurlijk veel te doen omtrent de nieuwe release candidate van Windows 7. Hierdoor is Windows Server 2008 R2 een beetje onder gesneeuwd. Veel mensen vergeten dat dit OS echter ook deze status heeft bereikt.

Jason Perlow van ZDnet besteedt er daarom wat extra aandacht aan. Hij wil benadrukken dat 2008 R2 echt gezien moet worden als Windows 7 Server en niet als een SP2 voor Server 2008.

Intel gaat voor nog dunnere en plattere computers. Met de CULV processoren (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage)hoopt Intel de reeds ingeslagen weg te verbreden. Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 RC enables IT administrators to manage roles and features that are installed on remote computers that are running Windows Server 2008 R2 (and, for some roles and features, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2003) from a remote computer that is running Windows 7 RC. Rob Weir van IBM deed eerder ook al testen met ODF-plug-ins. Nu SP2 voor Office 2007 verschenen is heeft de beste man zijn test opnieuw uitgevoerd met bedroevende resultaten. SP2 gaat alleen goed om met documenten die in SP2 gemaakt zijn. Andere ODF-implementaties kunnen ook niet goed met de SP2 documenten overweg. De enige uitzondering hierop is de CleverAge plug-in.

Uiteraard kan het heel goed zijn dat Microsoft met een volgende release van de code weer flinke stappen voorwaarts maakt maar voorlopig is het natuurlijk jammer.

Het blijkt dat Oracle RAC op VMware beter presteert dan Oracle RAC op fysieke servers.

Als dan gebruik gemaakt wordt van Standard Edition zou het ook een stuk goedkoper uitpakken dan met RAC. RAC is wel onderdeel van Standard Edition maar is beperkt tot 2 cores. Wil je meer cores, en dat wil je al gauw, dan komt er de zogenaamde RAC-tax bij.

Wel is het zo dat VMware HA niet hetzelfde is als de fout tolerantie van RAC. Heb je volledige fout tolerantie nodig dan is RAC je keuze.

De vraag is echter of je je Oracle systeem wel kunt/mag virtualiseren. Oracle heeft hier zo haar eigen mening over. Op Oracle’s eigen virtualisatieproduct mag het uiteraard wel. Hier is een heel artikel te vinden over dit onderwerp.

Disk partition alignment is a powerful tool for improving SQL Server performance. Configuring optimal disk performance is often viewed as much art as science. A best practice that is essential yet often overlooked is disk partition alignment. Windows Server 2008 attempts to align new partitions out-of-the-box, yet disk partition alignment remains a relevant technology for partitions created on prior versions of Windows.

This paper documents performance for aligned and nonaligned storage and why nonaligned partitions can negatively impact I/O performance; it explains disk partition alignment for storage configured on Windows Server 2003, including analysis, diagnosis, and remediation; and it describes how Windows Server 2008 attempts to remedy challenges related to partition alignment for new partitions yet does not correct the configuration of preexisting partitions.

Introduction

Configuring optimal disk performance is often viewed as much art as science. Yet an understanding of disk performance best practices can result in significant improvements. Some of the many factors that affect disk I/O performance include the number, size, and speed of disks; file allocation unit size; configuration of host bus adapters (HBAs) and fabric switches; network bandwidth; cache on disks, controllers, and storage area networks (SANs); whether disks are dedicated, shared, or virtualized; RAID levels; bus speed; number of paths from disk I/O subsystem to servers; driver versions for all components; factors related to RAID stripes sizes; and workload.

A best practice that is essential yet often overlooked is disk partition alignment.

The Windows Server® 2008 operating system attempts to align new partitions out of the box, yet disk partition alignment remains a relevant technology for partitions created on prior versions of the Windows® operating system.

Noncompliance with storage configuration best practices for the Microsoft® SQL Server® database software is a common root cause of support cases. The reason is often shown to be misalignment between Windows, storage, disk controllers, and cache segment lines.

Failure to perform partition alignment may result in significant performance degradation. Disk partition alignment is a requirement for partitions from which high performance is demanded and that were created on RAID disk devices on versions of Windows prior to Windows Server 2008. As we will explain, new partitions on Windows Server 2008 are created at a starting offset which (with high probability) aligns with underlying RAID stripe units.

For systems from which high performance is required, it is essential to experiment with representative workloads and determine the validity of disk partition alignment for your environment.

Unless performed at the time of partition creation, the default alignment offset will result in unaligned partitions on versions of Windows up to and including Windows Server 2003. These versions of Windows create disk partitions by default to boundaries based on the Cylinder/Head/Sector (CHS) addressing scheme used by previous generation disk controllers. Preexisting partitions attached to Windows Server 2008 maintain the original, flawed alignment under which they were created.

Systeembeheerders en integrators worden bediend met de Citrix Certified Enterprise Engineer for virtuali; De CCEE komt in de plaats van de Certified Enterprise Administrator 4-certificatie. Om hem te bemachtigen, moeten kandidaten een totaal van vijf examens halen. Oracle heeft wereldkundig gemaakt dat de interesse voor Sun vooral gelegen was in Java. Dat Oracle met de overname van Sun (die natuurlijk nog niet goedgekeurd of afgerond is) er een hardwareleverancier bij krijgt is slechts bijzaak, een leuke bijzaak zo lijkt het.

Oracle lijkt namelijk wel degelijk plannen te hebben een speler te worden voor het datacenter. Oracle heeft namelijk Virtual Iron overgenomen, zo’n beetje “the best of the rest” na de grote 3: VMware, Xen/Citrix en Microsoft.

Met Virtual Iron krijgt Oracle opnieuw een op Xen gebaseerde hypervisor in handen compleet met beheertooling. Het is Oracle duidelijk te doen om die beheertooling.

HDS has started OEMing the CommVault Simpana product for data deduplication.

HDS has announced its Data Protection Suite 8.0 and said it's powered by CommVault. The product uses Simpana 8.0 technology and is the latest event in the HDS CommVault OEM relationship.

Simpana 8.0 is a data protection and management suite which can provide access to a virtual pool of back, archive and online data on separate systems and also deduplicate data at sub-file level in a backup store.

Een hacker zegt een groot gat te hebben gevonden in IIS 6.0 (zoals dat in Windows Server 2003 zit). Volgens Nikalaos 'Kingcope' Rangos blijkt het ontzettend eenvoudig om langs de wachtwoordbeveiliging van WebDAV te komen en bestanden zonder password te downloaden.

Voorlopig, zolang de patch er niet is, is het beter WebDAV uit te schakelen. Let op dat SharePoint wel afhankelijk is van WebDAV.

Dennis Howlett van ZDnet haalt Chris Wolf van Burton Group aan. Hij heeft flink commentaar geleverd op Oracle’s houding omtrent haar licentiepolitiek m.b.t. X86 hypervisors. Feitelijk komt het erop neer dat Burton Group vindt dat Oracle X86 hypervisors nu eindelijk eens als “hard partitioning” moet erkennen.

Chris Wolf denkt dan ook dat de huidige licentiepolitiek, waarbij bedrijven extra moeten betalen als ze Oracle virtualiseren, een kwestie is van tijdrekken voordat Oracle een goed alternatief op de markt heeft.

Robin Harris van ZDnet bespreekt een veelvuldig gebruikte techniek in de wereld van kleine servers: RAID 5. Zijn opinie is dat bij kleine arrays het steeds onverstandiger wordt om RAID 5 te gebruiken. Denk hierbij aan opstellingen van 3 of 4 disks. De storagebedrijven zijn een aantal jaren terug ook al gestopt met het aanraden van dergelijke opstellingen.

De reden heeft te maken met het feit dat harde schijven in toenemende mate unrecoverable read errors hebben. Met name de moderne SATA-schijven, ook de Enterprise grade SATA-schijven, hebben een dergelijke leesfout ruwweg elke 12,5 TB.

In zijn ogen is RAID 1+0 een veel betere opstelling, veel veiliger (sneller ook, denk ik) en tegenwoordig nauwelijks duurder.

Het Microsoft Exchange team doet op haar blog de aankondiging van Update Rollup 8 voor Exchange Server 2007 SP1.

Met het uitbrengen van Service Pack 2 voor SharePoint 2007 heeft Microsoft een vreemde bug geïntroduceerd. Het Service Pack zorgt ervoor dat de server er na 180 mee stopt. Het pakket ‘denkt’ dat het een uitprobeerversie is geworden die na 180 dagen gebruik moet stoppen.

Het probleem beperkt zich niet alleen tot SharePoint maar treedt ook in Project Server 2007, Form Server 2007 en Search Server 2008 (en de Express versie).

Uiteraard heeft Microsoft het probleem al onderkend en werkt aan een hotfix. Ook is er een workaround mogelijk door de product ID opnieuw in te voeren.

Mary-Jo Foley van ZDnet heeft een stuk geschreven over Microsoft’s Bing, de nieuwe zoekmachine, of zoal Microsoft het zelf noemt beslissingsengine.

Microsoft heeft een security advisory uitgebracht over een zeer kritiek lek in DirectX dat door hackers actief misbruikt blijkt te worden.

HP heeft voor het midden- en kleinbedrijf een nieuw product gelanceerd gebaseerd op Windows Storage Server 2008 en een quad-core Xeon. Met dit product kan zowel NAS als iSCSI aangeboden worden. Er zijn modellen met 12, 36 en 96 TB Ethernet storage.

Met dit product hoopt HP de concurrentie met EqualLogica, NetApp FAS2000 en Sun’s 7000 Unified Storage lijn aan te kunnen.

Op Internet verschijnen er allerlei verhalen over Microsoft’s nieuwe search engine BING. Enerzijds gaan die over de nieuwe en een beetje merkwaardige naam. Anderzijds wordt al snel de vergelijking getrokken met de search engine van concurrent Google.

Rui Silva heeft een serie geschreven over de Exchange 2007 Edge Transport Server die als mail relay ingezet wordt voor een Exchange 2003 organisation.

There was a time, a couple of years after the release of Exchange Server 2003 when Microsoft thought, in delivering a product called Exchange Edge Services, that they would have created an intelligent message transfer agent for the edge of a company's network that would offer security, spam and virus protection. The fact is that Edge Services never saw the light of day as a standalone SKU. Instead, Microsoft released the Edge Transport Server role as part of Exchange Server 2007.

The Exchange Server 2007 Edge role is a very special role. It can not be collocated with any other Exchange Server 2007 role, it does not require Active Directory (it uses its own directory: Active Directory Application Mode - ADAM) and it is very, very secure. In fact, it is such an "independent" role, that it can be used as a smart host and the internet mail relay of an Exchange 2003 organization without requiring any of the migration steps necessary for an Exchange 2007 transition.

Although placing an Exchange 2007 Edge server as the mail relay of a messaging infrastructure does not require an upgrade of the Exchange organization to Exchange 2007, there are still some configuration tasks that need to be done. This article will describe all these tasks and all the required procedures.

SP2 is an update to Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista that incorporates improvements discovered through automated feedback, as well as updates that have been delivered since SP1. By providing these fixes integrated into a single service pack for both client and server, Microsoft provides a single high-quality update that minimizes deployment and testing complexity for customers.

Service Pack 1 is a prerequisite for installing Service Pack 2. Please make sure that your system is running Service Pack 1 before you install Service Pack 2.

Microsoft heeft bekend gemaakt dat er een flink gat zit in haar IIS 5 & 6 webserver. Het lek zit in WebDAV waarbij blijkt dat het wachtwoordmechanisme eenvoudig te omzeilen valt.

NetApp heeft aangekondigd DataDomain over te zullen nemen. Data Domain is nog een relatieve nieuwkomer op de storagemarkt en een specialist op het gebied van deduplicatie.

Op zich is de aanloop van Data Domain wel opmerkelijk vanwege de overlap met NetApp’s eigen software. Aan de andere kant wordt men hiermee wellicht marktleider op dit gebied.

Data Domain’s portfolio wordt in de NetApp portfolio voorlopig ongewijzigd opgenomen.

NetApp’s CEO Dan Warmenhoven dacht dat Data Domain al in de pocket was. Nu blijkt NetApp’s grootste concurrent EMC een goede poging te hebben gedaan om Data Domain voor het hol van de leeuw weg te kapen door een 20% hoger bod op de aandelen uit te brengen.

Als de overname van Data Domain door EMC doorgaat zal ook de CEO van Quantum, Rick Belluzo, flink tandenknarsen. Zijn bedrijf had net een $ 100 miljoen lening van EMC gehad om deduplicatie voor haar disk backup systemen te ontwikkelen (waarmee ze een concurrent van Data Domain willen worden). Misschien heeft Belluzo zelfs wel gedacht “waarom kopen ze niet Quantum?”.

AMD heft nu ook een 6-core processor in haar portfolio, net als rivaal Intel. Deze nieuwe processor met codenaam Istanbul komt geen moment te laat. Intel heeft al een 6-core processor sinds september vorig jaar, die heeft echter nog niet de geavanceerde memory technologie die de nieuwere 4-core Nehalems hebben.

Deze nieuwe loot aan de AMD-stam lijkt sterk op zijn recent geïntroduceerde 4-core Shanghai broertje en is dan ook pin-compatible. De ondersteuning voor DDR2 is gebleven maar DDR3 is op de lange baan geschoven. Deze Istanbul past in 2-, 4- en 8-socket systemen.

Van de grote hardwareboeren zijn nog geen systemen bekend die met deze processor geleverd gaan worden maar van de groten worden wel systemen verwacht.

Gabrie heeft een artikel geschreven over slim omgaan met Microsoft licenties en zo middels virtualisatie nog meer kosten te besparen.

De kern van het verhaal is dat Enterprise Edities van Windows 2003 en Windows 2008 met 4 extra licenties komen. Microsoft’s bedoeling was om op de server met de Windows licentie nog 4 virtuele servers te kunnen draaien. Maar dit mag ook ingezet worden op een VMware ESX platform of andere platformen. Een Enterprise Edition is dan in feite de licentie voor 5 systemen.

Met DataCenter Edition is het zo mogelijk in sommige gevallen nog interessanter omdat je daarmee onbeperkt mag virtualiseren. Houd echter in de gaten dat DataCenter Edition in de SPLA versie alleen als een zogenaamde ‘unauthenticated’ versie verkocht wordt waarbij je dus geen authenticatie via Active Directory mag toepassen. Dit maakt deze versie niet voor alle gevallen/klanten geschikt.

De materie van Microsoft licenties is niet voor iedereen even doorzichtig. Gelukkig zijn er wel een aantal websites en documenten waarin extra informatie te vinden is.

Gabrie heeft natuurlijk volledig gelijk als het gaat om het verlagen van kosten door slim licenties kopen. Denk hierbij aan de voorwaarden die Microsoft stelt:

· Standard Edition – 1 VM licentie

· Enterprise Edition – 4 VM licenties

· DataCenter Edition – ongelimiteerd aantal VM licenties (*) – zie SPLA bepalingen hieronder

De regels zijn ook van toepassing op virtualisatieproducten van andere leveranciers zoals VMware ESX of Citrix XenServer.

Wordt er gebruik gemaakt van een Service Provider License Agreement dan is DataCenter Edition alleen als een zogenaamde ‘unauthenticated’ versie en mag er geen gebruik gemaakt worden van Active Directory. Voor de VM’s die gebruik maken van dezelfde licentie geldt dezelfde beperking.

With Windows Server 2008 Anonymous Datacenter, you may run as many unauthenticated (also known as “anonymous”) guests as the hardware will support. Windows Datacenter edition allows you to install and run any down version of Windows Server for the guest operating system; however, the guest operating systems need to run in unauthenticated mode. For example, you can run Enterprise Edition on Data Center Edition as long as it runs in unauthenticated mode. Furthermore, neither the host nor guests can be configured to run under Active Directory.

This document applies equally well to other virtualization technologies such as VMware and XenSource when using Windows Server as a host or guest OS. Het laatste artikel probeert de business case te maken voor het gebruik van DataCenter Edition. Wanneer is deze interessant?

DC Ed. kost $3.000 per processor en op een grote bak met 4 sockets betaal je dus $12.000 voor een licentie (eigenlijk 4 licenties).

Zet dit af tegen een Standard Edition die $1.000 kost, dan kom je op 12 VM’s als break-even point.

Er is nog één andere opmerking die ik graag wil toevoegen over een licentievorm waar wel een probleem mee is in combinatie met virtualisatie.

Er worden soms systemen verkocht met een OEM-licentie. Zo verkopen vele leveranciers dikwijls de Small Business Edition van Windows bij een server. Die mag niet gevirtualiseerd worden want de licentie hoort bij de hardware. De licentie kan niet meegenomen worden naar andere hardware. Dus zelfs bij het vervangen van de server zul je(of de klant) een nieuwe licentie aan moeten schaffen.

Het superbeveiligde DNSsec-protocol kan voorkomen dat internetcriminelen gebruikers ongemerkt omleiden naar nepsites. De kans dat dat laatste gebeurt is groter geworden nadat Dan Kaminsky in juli 2008 wereldkundig maakte dat er een ernstig lek zit in het DNS-protocol.

De root van de DNS wordt voor het einde van dit jaar met DNSsec beveiligd. Dat maken de NTIA (National Telecommunications and Information Administration) en het NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) bekend.

De data wordne opgeslagen in een SQL database, en Layer 2 topology protocollen zoals Cisco Discovery Protocol zorgen voor automatische netwerk topology discovery.

IPPlan biedt DNS-beheer, management van configuratiebestanden, aanpasbaar circuit management en hardware-informatie opslag. Deze toepassing is geschikt voor een enkel network of meerdere netwerken met eventueel overlappende adresruimte.

4. Kismet - http://www.kismetwireless.net/
Kismet spoort 802.11 Layer 2 draadloze netwerken op, snift het netwerkverkeer en fungeert tevens als intrusie-detectiesysteem. Werkt met iedere wifi-kaart die raw monitoring (rfmon) ondersteunt en snift zowel 802.11b, 802.11a als 802.11g verkeer.

5. JFFNMS - http://www.jffnms.org/
Dit PHP network management-systeem maakt gebruik van een MySQL of een PostgreSQL database om SNMP-apparaten, servers en TCP-poorten te monitoren (zolang ze de standaarden maar volgen). Voor netwerkmanagers die bereid zijn eigen code te schrijven is JFFNMS ook in staat Cisco monitoring functies te leveren.

6. Spiceworks - http://www.spiceworks.com/
Spiceworks is een hele set management-tools die eventueel ook apart zijn te downloaden. De set biedt inventarisatie-tools (pc’s, software, netwerk), monitoring-tools (netwerk, exchange, licenties), rapportage-tools (assets, inventaris) en zelfs een helpdesk en IT portal. Een behoorlijk compleet pakket met een prettige vormgeving.

7. GroundWork - http://www.groundworkopensource.com/
GroundWork Open Source is een schaalbare IT monitoring-tool voor ondernemingen met heterogene besturingssystemen en een gevarieerde applicatie- en hardware-omgeving. Genereert overzichten en rapportages. Combineert een hele reeks open source projecten die zich inmiddels hebben bewezen, zoals Nagios, Apache en NMap, in een enkele omgeving met extra functionaliteit (zoals een web-based interface).

8. Hyperic HQ - http://www.hyperic.com/
De software van Hyperic is bedoeld om alle lagen van een web-infrastructuur te managen en te monitoren, inclusief hardware, middleware, virtualisatie en applicaties. Komt inclusief trend- en analyse-tools en ondersteunt Apache, JBoss, Linux en meer.

9. OpenNMS - http://www.opennms.org/
OpenNMS is een open source enterprise network management platform, met als doel een gedistribueerd en schaalbaar platform te creëren voor alle aspecten van het FCAPS netwerk management model. OpenNMS concentreert zich momenteel op service polling, data collection en event- en notificatie-management. Onderscheidt zich van Nagios doordat het nadrukkelijk gericht is op een entreprise-omgeving met grotere aantallen apparaten.

OpenQRM is een open source datacenter-managementplatform dat zich concentreert op automatische en snelle toepassingsgebaseerde implementaties, monitoring, hoge beschikbaarheid, cloud computing en met name de ondersteuning van meerdere virtualisatietechnologieën. Overview

The Planning Tool for Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 is a Windows Presentation Foundation standalone client application. The Planning Tool Wizard asks interview questions about features that the system administrator is interested in enabling in the Enterprise, as well as information about the Enterprise.

The Planning Tool uses the information gathered from the administrator to dynamically draw a recommended topology for every site that the administrator identifies. Additionally, the Planning Tool calculates the types and amounts of hardware needed across the entire Enterprise, as well as for each site. The Planning Tool also provides links to documentation of the specific planning and deployment tasks that the administrator will need in order to deploy the topology.

Overview

The Microsoft Windows Dynamic Cache Service will manage the working set size of the Windows System File Cache. For 64 bit systems this service helps to address the problem of excessive cached read I/O that could eventually consume all of physical memory. Remember these are performance tests that show how VMware performs under extreme heavy load. And they show that during that load, VMware can reach near native performance. In normal day-to-day situations it is easy to reach native performance.

Virtual Geek schrijft over veranderd gedrag in vSphere 4 ten opzichte van VI 3.x versies. Hij schrijft dat vSphere 4 nogal vreemde dingen doet met LUNs van 2 TB waar VI 3.x geen enkele moeite mee heeft.

Op het VMware forum is er ook een thread over te vinden.

Het schijnt te maken te hebben met de limiet voor LUNs die nu 512 bytes kleiner is geworden.

1) 2TB is a hard limit (still) in vSphere just like it was in VI3.5 for a single partition – but VMware is now actually stopping an out-of-space condition that can result in a bad case. If the last 512b is written to, bad things can happen. This change eliminates this possibility.

2) Note the behavior with LUNs that are LARGER than 2TB – it used to be (in the 3.0.x days) that you could get borked by simply saying “use all the available space” and bam, your VMFS datastore was gone – poof. See this KB article. You can’t bork yourself here – but you CAN waste space (after all in the example I did in the video with a 2.5TB LUN, only 500GB could be used), and who wants to be inefficient?

Remember – you can absolutely create large VMFS datastores, and extents can be your friend – read up on this here.

Wat ik me afvraag is hoe hij de vergelijking echt heeft kunnen doen. Ed zegt dat hij alle versies op zijn PC heeft geïnstalleerd en dus met een 5-weg multiboot systeem zijn vergelijking heeft gedaan.

Ik vind dit wat merkwaardig want Microsoft heeft tot nu toe alleen een Ultimate versie van zowel de bèta als de release candidate beschikbaar gemaakt…..

Door het hogere bod van EMC heeft NetApp haar bod op Data Domain moeten verhogen. Er is nu zo’n $ 400 miljoen bovenop het vorige bod gekomen. De Data Domain directie heeft unaniem de aandeelhouders geadviseerd in te gaan op dit bod.

Keith Combs gaat in op de vraag hoe de nieuwe Microsoft kernel het voor elkaar krijgt om een dual boot omgeving op te zetten waarbij geboot kan worden vanaf een VHD file.

Het leuke bij “ boot from VHD” is dat de machine die start geen virtuele machine is maar een die werkelijk ‘ het ijzer gebruikt’.

Op hun blog beantwoordt het MS Exchange Team de vraag of er ook voor Exchange 2010 een 32-bits versie beschikbaar komt.

Microsoft heeft voor Exchange 2010 besloten om geen 32-bits versie meer uit te brengen.

In het artikel gaan ze dan nog in op de redenen waarvoor je toch nog 32-bits systemen zou willen gebruiken en hoe je er dus met de nieuwe versie mee om zult moeten gaan.

Het Exchange team bespreekt een geval waarin de klant heeft geprobeerd om een Exchange restore te doen op een USB-disk. Dit lukte niet en de Microsoft engineer heeft uitgezocht waarom het misging.

Ken Cline gaat in op de vraag waarom Microsoft eigenlijk geeft om server-virtualisatie. Toen VMware begon met virtualisatie knipperde Microsoft niet eens met de ogen maar nu investeert Microsoft miljoenen in een eigen virtualisatieproduct.

Volgens Ken heeft dit te maken met controle over de x86-markt. Natuurlijk hebben Linux en Mac nog wel wat in de pap te brokkelen maar generiek kun je zeggen dat een X86-server Windows draait. Met de huidige ontwikkelingen leek Microsoft de grip op het datacenter een beetje kwijt te raken. Als dan ook de makers van hypervisors zouden besluiten om de frameworks, zoals .NET, in de hypervisor te stoppen zou de noodzaak om überhaupt nog Windows te draaien geheel verdwijnen.

Verwacht daarom dat Microsoft heel hard zal vechten op dit gebied want Microsoft zal zeker niet alleen als softwareleverancier tegen de anderen willen opboksen.

In Windows Server 2008 R2 zal een nieuw DJOIN.EXE tooltje het joinen van domains makkelijker maken. Met dit tool kun je zelfs offline een domain joinen. Helaas werkt het alleen met Windows 7 en Server 2008 R2, oudere OS’ en kennen dit trucje helaas niet.

Intel heeft natuurlijk al een aantal hele krachtige X86-processors in haar portfolio. Zo is er de Dunnington 6-core Xeon en de 4-core Nehalem EP Xeon 5500. Deze laatste is er een van het nieuwste soort, met een ingebouwde memory controller en 3 QuickPatch Interconnect (QPI) connectoren en 8 MB level 3 cache.

Nu is er ook de Nehalem EX met 8 cores, 24 MB level 3 cache, 4 QPI’s, turbo boost en HyperThreading. Deze nieuwe Nehalem 8-core kan ook nog eens twee keer zoveel memory adresseren als de kleinere EP broer. Daarnaast hebben beide processoren het voordeel dat er geen Fully Buffered DIMMs meer nodig zijn.

De nieuwe EX chips hebben een aanzienlijk hogere performance dan de huidige Xeon 7400 met 6 cores. 2,5 keer de memory bandbreedte,2,5 keer database performance, 1,7 keer integer throughput en 2,2 keer de floating point performance. Al met al bijzonder indrukwekkende cijfers.

Een andere belangrijke vernieuwing is MCA, ofwel Machine Check Architecture. MCA doet allerlei soorten checks waaronder checks for processor, memory en I/O errors. Het geeft een OS de mogelijkheid om iets met de fouten te doen en te corrigeren of recoveren waar mogelijk. De bekende OS-bouwers zoals Microsoft, Novell, Red Hat, SuSe en VMware hebben al te kennen gegeven dit te gaan ondrsteunen. Opvallend is dat dergelijke festures al in Intel’s Itanium processor bestonden en nu dus naar het X86-platform ‘afdalen’.

Een paar dagen terug meldde ik al dat Hitachi met failover clustering komt. Op zich was dit nieuws al opmerkelijk omdat iedereen de HDS storage kent als bijzonder fout-tolerant. Dan lijkt extra failover clustering niet zo’n zinvolle aanvulling.

Maar nu blijkt dat Hitachi met deze optie naar de bewering gaat dat ze 100% beschikbaarheid kunnen garanderen. Niet 5 negens maar de volle honderd procent. Dat zet de optie toch in een ander daglicht.

IBM heeft iets slims gedaan met SSD’s, ze worden ingezet als buffer tussen het geheugen en een op schijven gebaseerd storage systeem.

Volgens IBM is op dit moment nog het niet slim om SSD’s als vervanger van de high-end harde schijf in te zetten Daarvoor zijn ze gewoonweg te duur.

Om succesvol als buffer, zeg maar als cache, te fungeren heeft IBM een stuk software uitgebracht dat de naam Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem (DFSMS) draagt. De software analyseert welke data veel benaderd wordt en vult op die manier op een intelligente manier deze cache. Dit systeem is beschikbaar voor de zSeries en de DS8000 storage systemen.

The Register maakt melding van problemen met Patch 1 voor McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7. Het schijnt sporadisch voor te komen dat systemen Windows bestanden foutief bestempelen als kwaadaardig. McAfee heeft de Patch teruggetrokken en zoekt de meldingen uit. Als het opgelost is wordt de Patch opnieuw uitgebracht.

Opmerkelijk is dat binnen Logica deze Patch wel gebruikt wordt en er nog geen probleemgevallen zijn geconstateerd.

Ryan Naraine, die ook vaak schrijft voor ZDnet, heeft een pleidooi geschreven voor een Patch week waarin alle leveranciers met hun patches uitkomen. Het wordt steeds maar moeilijker en gekker om het bij te houden.

Ryan schetst op zijn site hoeveel er uit is gekomen in de laatste 2 weken. Tussen mei en juni 2009 werden er 515 vulnerabilities gepatcht.

Misschien is het inderdaad zaak dat de industrie gezamenlijk tot de conclusie komt om een patchweek in te stellen.

Mark Russinovich heeft een diepgaand artikel geschreven over de UAC-feature. Deze kennen we al sinds Vista (en Server 2008). Maar met de komst van Windows 7 en Server 2008 R2 is er nogal het nodige veranderd aan de feature.

Er is natuurlijk de laatste tijd meer en meer hype omtrent cloud computing. Nu heeft Foster er een kritisch signaal over afgegeven.

Cloud computing is een grote belofte maar er kleeft volgens Forrester een heel belangrijk nadeel aan: een vendor lock-in.

Een applicatie in de cloud krijgen is tegenwoordig niet meer zo moeilijk. Eruit halen daarentegen wel…..

Het advies van Forrester naar met name grote bedrijven is toch om een aantal cloud projecten te doen, al was het maar om er ervaring mee op te doen.

Met de .NET 3.5 update die Microsoft recentelijk heeft verspreid via Windows Update krijgen Firefox gebruikers ook een plug-in in Firefox geïnstalleerd voor .NET.

Excuse Me, Are You an IT Professional?

My first salaried job was in the IT industry as a System Support Engineer back in 1997 and I have since worked with quite a number of IT professionals.... but are they really legitimate IT professionals?

The sad truth about this industry is that it consists of a large percentage of highly unqualified people, and these people are seriously tarnishing the image of real IT professionals with their incompetence, lack of real knowledge and poor behavior. The problem starts with the mentality of non-technical people in positions of influence who believe that IT professionals are people who know how to use a mouse and all IT problems can be solved with a click.

This is a very scary definition and it has introduced two major headaches into the current IT industry.

Problem # 1 - Mismatched and Overworked IT Professionals

This is a serious problem because most hiring managers and HR professionals see no difference between a programmer and a system administrator; we are just the people who sit in front of the computer all day pressing a few buttons. (This leads to the common phenomena where a system engineer is asked to do programming jobs or a web developer is forced to maintain a network.)

However, the worst that can really happen to any IT professional is being turned into a "one man IT department". Imagine yourself doing everything from data-entry to end-user support, system administration, network setup, programming, web design, IT related paper work, liaison with vendors, and not to mention meetings and sometimes electrical appliances/equipment every single day of your working life.

And this is indeed happening because managers have the impression that anything related to IT can simply be solved with just a click or 2 on a computer icon. Poor chaps like these will most probably die of overwork or caffeine-poisoning. Even if they survive the abuse, they will most likely become disgruntled and in need of therapy.

To illustrate the problem in a different manner, let's use the context of a hospital. Imagine that there is only 1 neurosurgeon in a hospital and this hospital performs 2 neuro-surgeries everyday (each surgery takes 4 hours). We also have 10 junior doctors who are supposed to attend to 50 cases of the flu everyday (each common flu consultation takes 10 minutes).

If you are the CEO of this hospital, would you have the neurosurgeon handle the flu patients every day? You'll end up having 10 idle junior doctors, 1 extremely overworked neurosurgeon and 2 dead patients every day.

Problem # 2 - Devaluation of the Industry and Productivity

With such a large number of unqualified people in the IT industry, it is not surprising that most IT professionals view each other with skepticism. We tend to worry whenever a new engineer arrives because we never know if the guy is just another joke. While it is not a crime not to know everything under the sun (which is impossible anyway) it is a sin to act as if you do. I have had my fair share of working with jokers as well as being perceived as a joke. It's just a vicious cycle which only serves to remind us that continuous learning is part of being an real IT professional.

To better explain my point, I've classified the people dealing with computers into a few major categories.

End-user	The typical "End-User" thinks that IT professionals spend their time in university learning how to use Microsoft Office. (To them, IT evolves around Microsoft Office) Insists that rebooting a PC requires a PHD in Computer Science. To them, there is no difference between a Network Engineer and a Database Administrator. We are just the people who sit down in front of the computer and play computer games.
Power-User	Knows how to operate the basic Windows and Microsoft Office Suite well. Some rare specimens are worthy of being of assistance to the "Freshie" technician/programmer. Occasionally suffers from mental delusions (thinks they are on par with a Computer Science graduate) and would mislead management into thinking that all aspects of computing involves only 3 clicks on the mouse. Can be quite irritating at times when they try to convince you that they are professional programmers since that know how perform basic calculations in Microsoft Excel.
Hobbyist	Usually spend their free time dabbling in certain aspects of IT (e.g. PC assembly or home networking). Some "Hobbyists" are on par with the "Freshie" from school although their lack of knowledge on the basics can be shocking. The unenlightened ones can be quite irritating with their jester-like behavior. Some real IT professionals of one discipline can be a "Hobbyist" of another discipline. (E.g. A System Administrator can be a hobbyist webmaster)
Freshie / Junior	"Freshies" are computer professionals who just graduated from a university/school. Usually working at a helpdesk, junior technicians/programmers or assistant engineers. Some tend to think that they are better than their senior counterparts since they learned the latest technology in school. (And some of them are!) Technically incompetent "Freshies" tend to evolve into the egotistical "Junior" staff. "Junior" staff can be quite irritating as they like to insist that their methods are correct when the problem lies with their lack of real knowledge.
Generalist	Been in the industry for a few years and usually have a diploma/degree in Computer Science or IT. Some "Generalists" have been in the industry for quite a long period of time but chose not to specialize due to personal interest or the lack of it. Usually competent/familiar with major aspects of computing. (E.g. System Administration, Inter-Networking, RDBMS, Web Technology, Programming, etc.) Are usually very good/fast troubleshooters as they know most aspects of IT and how they work together. Can sometime be slow or stuck when troubleshooting certain high level problems due to lack of specialization or when dealing with a vendor's proprietary products.
Specialist	Very focused in one discipline of the industry (e.g. inter-networking) or one section of a discipline (e.g. programming in C++) Some "Specialists" of one discipline are typically also "Generalists" (E.g. Specialist in Inter-Networking but is familiar with System Administration and RDBMS) A "Specialist" tends to work with vendor proprietary products. (E.g. Sun Microsystems or Microsoft)
God-mode	"Specialist" in almost all aspects of computing. Usually highly intelligent and very technically inclined. Earns the respect and love of other IT professional. (This is very rare)
Application specialist	Usually "Power Users" with explicit knowledge in a certain industry. (E.g. Accounting, Nursing) Functions like an operator but are deemed as high value due to their knowledge of a specific industry. (E.g. an accounting application specialist needs accounting background to communicate and tech the end-users on how to use an accounting application)
Wannabes	"Wannabes" are "End-Users" or "Power-Users" who try to enter the IT profession by passing vendor certifications (E.g. A+ ,MCSE) with unscrupulous methods such as memorizing books and braindumps. Usually does not possess any tertiary education in IT and does not understand how actual systems (servers, networks) function in real production environments. Usually egotistical and self-deceiving believing that they know as much as real IT professionals or even more. Usually embarrass themselves with their attempts to display their knowledge or rather the lack of it. (Imagine dancing chimpanzees in human clothing) Can be extremely irritating as they are always clueless, yet always trying to save their pride when facing real IT professionals.
Paper Engineers	"Wannabes" who managed to con their way into getting a job that requires a real IT professional. Usually panics when a real problem occurs. Some "Paper Engineers" eventually realize their insignificance and evolve into IT professionals after they put in real efforts to learn what they need to.

I did not include project managers, sales personnel nor IT managers in the list above because they are usually just "Power-Users" unless they started out with a technical background. To give an example, I have recently worked with an IT Project Manager who insisted that I forsake all of my administration duties and perform some basic typing in Microsoft Word for her (It was needed in a hurry and her own staff were not around). In my opinion, she failed to fulfill 2 very basic requirements needed for her job as an IT project manager;

The skills to use basic office productivity tools.

To quote a phase from the article - Dealing With The Technophobic

"If a job involves the use of a computer, then the employee should be required to know how to use it to a satisfactory level, whether the use of the computer is the focus of their job or not. Many restaurants use computers for the wait staff to enter orders into. Is it acceptable for a waiter to not know how to use the computer because it is not the focus of their job? Of course not! The same goes for everyone else"

I have no idea how often she actually torments her own engineers by making them type her reports or presentations, but how can she even fathom and manage IT projects when she doesn't even know how to utilize basic office productivity tools? If the company needs to pay for another full-time employee just to makeup for her lack of computer skills, then I doubt that she is worth her salary and job title.

Lack of interpersonal skills

As a project manager, part of her role includes communicating on the behalf of us techies. She was so blunt and tactless with her military style of commanding, I seriously doubt her worth as a liaison. Throughout her display of ignorance, she didn't even say the magic word - "Please". (I don't even work for her)

Conclusion

The only way that IT professionals can ever regain their rightful respect and monetary value is to hope that the younger generation are tech-savvy enough to understand the complexity of our jobs and that they are smart enough to identify the real professionals from the quacks.

Until such a day actually happens, we will have no choice but to endure.
